Hymenoptera: Vespidae
Vespula Germanica
I could hear wasps buzzing close by my head as they approached the nest, and felt the wind from their little wings. Or perhaps it was just me feeling a bit windy. I already thought I was closer to the nest than was wise.
Before any misunderstandings occurred between them and me, I quietly retired, managing not to slip on the steep damp slope into the deep waterhole behind me as I did so. No one has yet been recorded as dying of European Wasp stings in Victoria, but that may be because the cunning little devils make it look like a drowning.
Your humble photographer (that's me) apologises for not taking closer-up photographs of the wasp nest. But if you really, really want one, feel free to drop me a line, and I may lend you my camera.
